Community Service Initiative Kick-Off:
We are excited to kick off our annual Community Service Initiative! This event has always been a great success; it is very meaningful to our community and we can't wait to begin this year's efforts.
This year, we have three partner organizations/initiatives for our Community Service Initiative. Each of these is described below, together with the items being requested. Look out for a note from your class parents/teachers about the organization that your child's class has selected.
Collecting Donations:
Donations will then be collected from November 14 until November 23. There will be a collection bin provided to each classroom for donations.
Culminating Classroom Activity:
Finally, the Community Service Initiative will culminate around Thanksgiving week by doing in-class activities related to generosity, the importance of charitable giving and/or other themes related to your selected organizations. This should take place in lieu of a traditional Thanksgiving class party. As always, please coordinate with your teacher on the Thanksgiving week activity.
Thank you in advance for your support and dedication to this initiative. We know that this will be another successful year and that we'll be able to help so many people in need in our community. Please feel free to email Matt or Evan with any questions you may have at evan_b@pa101.org or matt_g@pa101.org
This year’s partner initiatives/organizations are:
1. Supporting local families seeking asylum (new coats for children and adults): Our school has partnered with another school in the district that serves a high number of families that are part of the recent influx of those seeking asylum in the U.S. These families are in need of new coats for children and adults.
2. Forestdale (new toys worth $30-40, with a particular need for toys that are appropriate for ages 6-9): Forestdale is the only child welfare agency headquartered in Queens, with a mission to serve as a resource for all families in the borough. In addition to ensuring the well-being of abused and neglected children through foster care and adoption services, they partner with schools, religious organizations, business owners and community leaders to address the underlying causes of families in crisis. Note that given the recommended price for toys, multiple families may want to join together to purchase one.
3. Commonpoint Queens - The Hub (new/sealed packages of diapers, formula, and/or wipes): Commonpoint Queens works with families and individuals in NYC by providing free services in job placement, vocational training, benefit enrollment, food pantry and more. They are currently in urgent need of diapers, formula and wipes (new and sealed) for parents who are currently unemployed, living in shelters, living below the poverty level and can’t receive any government assistance.
